Khunjerab Pass
Khunjerab Pass marks the border between Pakistan and China at the top of the Karakoram Highway. At around 4,700 metres it is one of the highest paved border crossings anywhere, and standing at the border gate is a highlight for many travellers.
The pass sits inside Khunjerab National Park, home to Marco Polo sheep, ibex and snow leopards, though you need luck to see them. The air is thin, so walk slowly, drink water and do not stay too long if you feel dizzy.
The pass usually opens for travel from spring to late autumn and closes in winter. Even in summer it can snow, so carry a warm jacket and check the road status before you leave Sost.
How to reach
Drive north on the Karakoram Highway past Sost and through Khunjerab National Park. From Sost the climb to the top takes about two hours. Foreign visitors and locals pay the national park entry fee at the gate.
