Attabad Lake

Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan

Altitude2,559 m
Best timeApril to October
Weather in Hunza-4°C, Clear

Attabad Lake was born out of a disaster. In January 2010 a huge landslide blocked the Hunza River near Attabad village, and the water slowly backed up into a long lake that drowned part of the old Karakoram Highway. Today the water is a striking turquoise, and the lake has become one of the most photographed places in Pakistan.

Most visitors stop for boating, jet skiing or a cup of tea at one of the lakeside cafes. The best colour shows on a clear sunny day around midday. In winter the edges can freeze, and some activities close.

If you have more time, combine the lake with Gulmit and Passu further up the highway, or head back towards Karimabad for the forts. Carry cash, because card machines are rare along this stretch.

How to reach

Attabad Lake sits right on the Karakoram Highway, about 2 to 3 hours from Gilgit by car. The road passes through a series of tunnels along the lake shore, and there are parking spots and boat points on the way.
