Deosai Plains
Deosai is one of the highest plateaus in the world, a rolling open land at around 4,000 metres between Skardu and Astore. In summer it turns green and is covered with wildflowers, and clear streams cross it in every direction.
The plains are a national park that protects the Himalayan brown bear. Sheosar Lake, near the Chilim side, is the most famous stop and reflects the mountains on a calm day. Bara Pani is a common camping spot by the river.
Deosai is only open for a few months each year, roughly July to September. Weather changes quickly, so carry warm clothes, food and water, and avoid leaving any rubbish behind.
How to reach
Deosai can be crossed by jeep from Skardu via Sadpara, or from the Astore side via Chilim. Most people hire a jeep with a driver in Skardu for a day trip. The road is unpaved and opens only in summer.
